Meredith Sumenek attends Capitol protest
On Wednesday, September 10th, Meredith Sumenek joined thousands of Missourians from across the state to protest the Missouri State Legislature’s unconstitutional redrawing of our Congressional districts.
Missouri’s state constitution says that our US Congressional Districts should be redrawn once every ten years after each new US Census, to reflect changes in the state’s population. After the most recent 2020 Census, our districts were redrawn according to that rule. But, under pressure from politicians in the federal government, the Governor of Missouri called a special session and demanded that the legislature approve a new map that would change the districts again, in defiance of the state constitution.
The new map has a lot of problems. It divides the core of Kansas City into multiple districts. It draws part of St. Louis County into a district with Gasconade County. It was deliberately drawn to dilute the power of urban and suburban voters like the people of St. Louis County.
And this whole process was done without a State Representative in the legislature to stand up for the people of the 95th State House District, because the Governor still has not officially called a special election to fill that seat, or three other vacant State House seats across Missouri.
Meredith went to stand up for our rights as voters and let the politicians in Jefferson City know they are supposed to work for the people of Missouri not themselves.
